Final Tutorial with David

Unfortunately we were very rushed today as we were experiencing issues with sync for our video. The export from last night worked well with some devices but not others, this meant this morning we have been frantically trying to sort the issue.

As the hand-in was later this day, we asked David for a few last minute tips regarding how to check boxes and gain the extra marks needed for our blogs. Things like illustrating our learning outcomes and how we will meet them, what the reflective summary should include, and ensuring a neat, easy-to-read layout.

Tutorial Meeting

With one week to go until hand in, today’s meeting was focused on upload formats, the blog and the Viva Voce. One Quicktime film or online web link is all David needs, as he is marking it as any audience member would experience it. The link for the blog needs to be uploaded by all three of us, but only one needs to upload the film. The Viva Voce will be on 13th January in David’s office. He suggested having a look at the marking criteria which is found on Blackboard for more information, but explained that they will be marking the learning outcomes, research, our professionalism and an evaluation from clients.

We also discussed a couple of problems we had been having with the Sound Theatres: RX crashed on me a few times, and the foley session Dan and Rob started with corrupted, which means they had to start again from scratch.

Finally, Rob asked a little about Career’s advice, to which David pointed to the Career’s service at uni and the upcoming guest lectures (in particular Grant Bridgeman’s freelance session). The outcome of the session was to make sure we get the film and blogs in on time, while spending the festive period preparing for the Viva Voce.

Tutorial with David

In this week’s meeting, we informed David that we would be missing next Mon-Wed due to these being our filming dates. Fortunately, we will not be missing a guest lecture, although we will miss the Creative Enterprise session taken by Jason Bradbury on Tuesday. Also, because we will be missing these dates, we need to fill in absence forms.

The key information in this session was us letting David know that our film group have had a sudden change of location in the last couple of days. Originally, we were all set for shooting in Hannah’s spare bedroom. However, after a meeting with Mikey this week, he suggested they try to find somewhere else in their spare time if at all possible. This led to the film crew going on another location scout all day Thursday, before settling on an attic room in Lincoln BIG as a definite for the location of the film. Luckily, Dan had visited the attic in the morning before the tutorial, so he could inform us of the traffic noise and low ceilings which would cause a problem when shooting. However, these are challenges to work through and can be reflected upon in our final summaries, as it is out of our control whether the director changes the location at the last minute, as she has done here.

The weekend will consist of preparing for the shoot next week, ensuring we capture the highest quality of audio we can on location for the film.

Weekly Meeting with David

This week’s meeting with David was fairly uneventful. We discussed how the project was coming along, how the group meetings were going and the schedule for the next few days and weeks. David reminded us of a masterclass being run by Jack Shellbourn on 7th Dec, in which he will be providing us with useful tips, knowledge and understanding of how to work with a Director of Photography. Simple, but essential knowledge, such as where to boom from when considering the framing, for example. Rob, Dan and myself all signed up. David also informed us that recent work we had done, such as removing a siren from a dialogue track could be useful research to upload to the blog. Subsequently, I have outlined my process during this task which can be found here.

Other than that, not much to report. Just the continuation of research and preparation for the shoot.

Informal Proposal

Friday 21st October

Week 4 – Project Proposal

Today in our meeting with David, it was time for our project proposal. This was an informal affair, where we discussed the following areas of the project with David:

Working title, project outline, requirements from the client (their brief), our group aims and objectives (directed towards the brief), our own individual learning outcomes, roles and research.

David seemed pleased with our progress so far, but instructed us to alter our learning objectives once again. My individual learning outcomes were too wordy, so David suggested creating succinct bullet points explicitly stating the learning outcomes, instead of a paragraph including context of why these are our objectives. David also suggested thinking of ways to draw out these outcomes – how we would assess them. To that end we could ask for feedback from the clients, tutors and peers. This would allow the reflective summary to examine to what extent our individual objectives had been achieved.

We also suggested a resources that each member of the team had bought, Ric Viers’ The Location Sound Bible (2012) that the library could invest in. As well as the blog being professional through application – this meant not filling the blog with the technical aspects of polar patterns, etc. but instead key relationships between the teams. David also suggested a session with Jack Shelbourn which included problem solving skills such as where/how to boom professionally when working with the DoP.

Work for the following week therefore included fixing up the individual learning objectives, continuing posting and researching for the blog, and collaboration with the film group – additional location scouts, ideas on actors/title sequence, etc.
